Americans And The Pizza  by Alfred Ardis
Just the word pizza is enough to make a person’s mouth water. Americans of all ages love to eat this iconic meal. The original Italian spelling of this dish was “pizze” and began to show up on street corners in the U.S. in the early 1900s. Cities where immigrants from Italy settled included Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco, so of course this is where the tasty food product began to land on menus. A savvy street vendor enticed customers by strolling the avenues with a stack of pizzas in a container on top of his head. As most people know, once you’ve tasted the combination of dough, sauce and cheese, you’re hooked. Cafes, diners and restaurants soon listed this as a menu item. What’s so tantalizing about this food? It’s tasty, versatile, inexpensive, easy to transport and amazingly nutritious. Here are some things to think about:
Tasty: Every culture has a sandwich-like product consisting of a grain, protein and veggie. Tacos from Mexico have tortilla, meat, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Sub sandwiches from American have bread, meat, cheese, and vegetables. Pizza is Italy’s similar product consisting of crust, tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushrooms, pepperoni and more. The combinations are tasty.
Versatile: Toppings can range from pineapple, onion, olive, sausage and more to plain cheesy. Modern pizzerias have added even more interesting toppings including Thai chicken, glazed pear slices, feta and just about anything edible. Have a favorite food? Slice it up and throw it on for a yummy new invention. Crusts can be thick, thin or in between. Calzones are another variation. Instead of having a flat layer of crust, calzones are folded and sealed like turnovers. Some chefs reinvent the crust as well. Instead of using dough, English muffins, flat bread or crackers can be substituted. Creative cooks can come up with tasty innovations.
Inexpensive: Whether this menu item is made at home or ordered from a restaurant, it’s a relatively low priced choice. One pizza can feed a large family depending on how the pie is sliced and how hungry the gang is. When preparing this dish at home, it can be dirt cheap as long as a chef doesn’t go too crazy with pricey toppings. Flour, yeast, water, tomato sauce and a smattering of mozzarella are the basic ingredients and are easy to squeeze into the most modest food budgets.
Easy to transport: From the peddler walking with a stack on his head in a metal container, this item has been transported to hungry mouths with ease. Today, pizzerias have flat cardboard boxes to contain them as they are delivered or picked up. If a huge crowd is being fed, these boxes can be stacked and carried by one person.
Nutritious: A balanced diet is contained in one pie. Grains, proteins and veggies make this a nutritious and delicious choice.
Pizza is popular for good reason. Americans can thank the original guy from Italy with great balancing skills for displaying this tasty menu item on his head and teaching us to love “pizze.”
